Gengar is an outstanding Special Sweeper. With access to STAB Shadow Ball, and a decent move pool, it can fulfill multiple roles at once. Is one of the prime examples of a glass cannon, with awful defenses but an amazing Speed and Special Attack that can send most Pokemon crying home.

With Shadow Ball as Gengar's main STAB, it can deliver plenty of damage. Energy Ball is a must in order to deal massive damage on Pokemon like Hippowdon, who can counter with Crunch. Destiny Bond can be used to cripple a team, and get rid of a wall or important sweeper once Gengar is on the edge. Because Dark Pulse fails to deliver the STAB Shadow Ball does, and is resisted by everything Shadow Ball is, save Normal types, it can be replaced with Confuse Ray. Confuse Ray can be used to possibly cripple most Pokemon with self-inflicted damage.
252 SpA Gengar Energy Ball vs. 252 HP / 112 SpD Hippowdon: 116-138 (53.9 - 64.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Delphox: 138-164 (92 - 109.3%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO

Checks and Counters
Special Walls: Umbreon is a key choice. It resists Gengar's main STAB, and leaves Gengar helpless.
Alakazam: Alakazam is most likely the best answer to Gengar when pitted in a 1v1 with Sweepers, being faster and able to deliver an OHKO with a STAB Psychic or Psyshock.
